Abstract
This review of the literature from 1996/97, including books as well as journal and newspaper articles, covers developments concerning the relationships between man and animals, and man and nature. The following themes are considered: developments; trends and perspectives; philosophy: theology; eco-ethics; legal questions; animal experimentation; freedom of research, teaching, and conscience; animal farming; hunting; fishing; zoos; circuses; biotechnology; violence and the killing of animals; vegetarianism; and dignity of creatures. The review includes a bibliography of about 300 citations.
